The Barack Obama College Preparatory High School will open its doors in 2017.
President Obama is getting a school named after him in his hometown of Chicago.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced Thursday that the city plans to build the Barack Obama College Preparatory High School to open its doors for the 2017-2018 school year, reports The Grio.
Education officials say that the Obama school will open with a freshman class of 300 students and will add remaining classes in the following years. The school is a part of an effort to provide Chicago with more competitive selective enrollment programs; the Obama School will be the 11th program of its kind in the city.
In Chicago’s competitive selective enrollment schools, nearly 16,500 students applied for 3,200 seats. The new school will help expand the opportunities for the nation’s third-largest school district.
