Congress heard from officials with the Obama administration and U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton on April 29 who came out to discuss the disparity in the way prison sentences are doled out to those accused of dealing and using crack cocaine versus the powdered version, according to the Associated Press. Under the current law, anyone found in possession of five grams (like five packets of sweetener) of crack carries the same sentence as someone who is found with half a kilogram (of 500 packets of sweetener) of powdered cocaine. Most of those convicted (81 perecent) for crack offences in 2007 were African-Americans. President Obama called for the change during his campaign last year. His administration is also looking to increase drug treatment and rehab programs for ex-cons after their release from prison.-WLW
