President Obama Announces $300 Million Initiative to Reduce HIV in African Women

In an effort to slash HIV rates in sub-Saharan Africa, the Obama administration has allocated $300 million in funding to provide antiretroviral treatment to millions of girls and young women.

According The Guardian, the administration hopes to reach 12.9 million people over the next two years.

“No greater action is needed right now than empowering adolescent girls and young women to defeat HIV/AIDS,” national security adviser Susan Rice said in a statement. “Every year, 380,000 adolescent girls and young women are infected with AIDS.”

Additionally, the money will be used to fund 13 million circumcisions among young African men to cut the risk of infection.
