Oxford Dictionary’s word of the year isn’t quite a word and it doesn’t technically have an official name, but we’ve all used it recently.

The “Face with Tears of Joy” emoji is the 2015 word of the year.

According to the Oxford Dictionary Blog, the emoticon was chosen as the ‘word’ because it “best reflected the ethos, mood, and preoccupations of 2015.”

The expressive emoji known as the LOL or Laughing emoji, comprised nearly 20% of all emojis used within the U.S. over the course of the year as confirmed by the mobile tech business, SwiftKey.

Whether it’s used to punctuate some shade throwing or merely a sign of uncontrollable laughter, this emoji will always be in the frequently used folder and will now forever be recognized as one of the greatest of all time.
