Oprah Winfrey surprised her godson William Bumpus, son of her best friend Gayle King, and more than 4,000 other graduates at Duke University, by being the school’s commencement speaker, according to MSNBC. She challenged students to be courageous, mindful of the decisions they make and to help others. “How can I help somebody else move to higher ground? That is success. That’s it. That’s why we’re all alive,” she told the crowd. In 2007, Oprah accepted an honorary degree and was the commencement speaker at Howard University, her first college graduation speaking engagement in a decade. -CJ
