Some of the world's greatest athletes aren't just going for gold in their sport.
Medals aren’t the only thing this year’s Olympians are trying to score in Rio. The world’s greatest athletics are looking to win in more ways than one and that includes in the bedroom.
Before the opening ceremony, Olympic officials mentioned the increase of the supplies of condoms in response to the Zika virus spread, but the organizers have nearly doubled the amount made available in previous years. At London’s summer Olympics, organizers supplied 150,000, but this year’s record number of 450,000 Olympic branded condoms have been made available via dispensing machines.
The colorful dispensers with the slogan, “Celebrate with a condom!” have been made available throughout the village.
When you spend 16 days in an Olympic village around thousands of chiseled, sculpted and aesthetically pleasing athletic bodies, there’s bound to be an increase in sexual activity. “With a once-in-a-lifetime experience, you want to build memories, whether it’s sexual, partying or on the field,” Hope Solo told ESPN during the London Olympics. “I’ve seen people having sex right out in the open. On the grass, between buildings, people are getting down and dirty.”
In addition to the close living quarters, it’s easier to connect with other Olympians for a quick hook-up with social media and popularity of dating apps. According to a recent report from Tinder, the app’s usage is heating up in Rio. The app’s premium service, Passport allows users to transport their location and swipe anywhere in the world, and athletes are swiping right during their days off.

As of Sunday, there has been a 129% increase in matches in the Olympic Village.
“The Olympic Games have started and Tinder use has skyrocketed in Rio de Janeiro. Over the weekend, matches in the Olympic Village increased by 129 percent and we expect this trend to continue throughout the Games. Rio has also become the most popular place in the world to swipe using Tinder’s Passport feature – with Rio visits increasing by 211 percent during the same time,” Rosette Pambakian, VP of Global Communications & Branding at Tinder shared.
Whether they are looking for companionship or a quickie, these athletics are finding ways to blow off steam or celebrate their victories the best way they know how!
