In a video released by the White House yesterday, President Obama had a unique plea for all the artists and songwriters who were being honored at the Grammys: Help end sexual violence.
“It’s not ok, and it has to stop,” he said in the video. “Artists have a unique power to change minds and attitudes and get us thinking and talking about what matters. All of us—and our lives—have the power to set an example.”
Citing that one in five women in this country are victims of rape or attempted rape and more than a quarter of women have experienced domestic violence, Obama invited viewers to join his new “It’s On Us” campaign. The campaign, which specifically targets sexual violence on college campuses, is centered around gaining the support and influence of celebrities and athletes.
“It’s on us—all of us—to create a culture where violence isn’t tolerated, where survivors are supported, and where all our young people—men and women—can go as far as their talents and their dreams will take them,” he said.
