New York City workers and immigrants are joining the fight for justice in the case of Freddie Gray. The May 1st Coalition for Worker & Immigrant Rights, which holds a rally for workers’ rights every year, is devoting its march to Gray and the ongoing issue of police brutality.
The New York City march, which will follow an earlier rally, is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Union Square and occurs just hours after Baltimore state’s attorney Marilyn Mosby brought charges against the officers responsible for Gray’s death. Tonight’s rally coincides with the continuous protests that have been taking place in Baltimore since Gray died on April 19.
“We stand in solidarity with Baltimore in the wake of the most recent killing of Freddie Gray at the hands of Baltimore police,” said co-coordinator Charles Jenkins to a New York City CBS affiliate. “The war on Black lives continues from Michael Brown to Eric Garner and countless others. The common thread—all Black and brown people killed by White police officers.”
