Three techie African female software entrepreneurs create a natural hair app to tap into the $1.1 billion hair care industry.
Black hair is big business and so are mobile apps. Merge those two and you have tapped into a massive market of potential just waiting for the growing number of black women in tech to pounce.
Three software entrepreneurs (Priscilla Hazel, Esther Olatunde and Cassandra Sarfo) are the creators of Tress, a mobile app of Black women from around the world sharing all types of hairstyles, products, and salon information. The three techies became friends at the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology program and launched Tress last June to fulfill a need and a growing service worldwide. A hair app for women is nothing new (we all have our favorites!) but finding natural hair inspiration along with styling techniques and salons information is somewhat challenging in some parts of the world.
“Many ladies routinely find themselves in the awkward position of walking up to complete strangers to compliment and inquire about their hair, or stalk social media accounts for inspiration as well as adequate information about the style,” says CEO of Tress, Priscilla Hazel. The free app allows users to upload pictures of hair with salon and product information.
The app is in its first version and soon to release on iOS but can be downloaded on Google Play now.
