A father of 11 was stabbed to death while protecting his 8-year-old son during an attempted robbery in Jersey City, NJ.

Jose Malave, 30, was killed at his home in front of his girlfriend and four children by a teenager attempting to rob his son of his sneakers. The incident began earlier in the day when Malave’s son was confronted by a group of teenagers who wanted his sneakers. Malave was dropping his son off at home before heading to his construction job when the teens showed up at the Malave’s home on a second attempt to rob the child.

Malave was stabbed as he tried to defend his son from one of the teens.

The police were called to the home just after 7:00 p.m. and found Malave’s body in the doorway of the apartment. He was pronounced dead at 7:25 p.m.

A 17-year-old boy, whose name has not been released, has been arrested and charged with felony murder, armed burglary, weapons offenses and conspiracy in the murder. According to PIX 11, another teen — age 19 — has also been arrested and identified as Nasair Day. Day was charged with murder, armed burglary and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose.

According to the victim’s sister Yesenia Malave, Malave just moved into the Jersey City apartment just two months ago.

“He was always outgoing, always happy, always trying to help people.”

A fundraising page has been set up to pay for funeral services and to support Malave’s children. Anyone with additional information about the fatal stabbing should contact the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office anonymous tip website or call 201-915-1345.
