Former South African President Nelson Mandela, 94, was admitted into the hospital yesterday, reports CNN.
However, a statement from his office was released in efforts to calm fears and said it’s only for a routine checkup.
“Doctors are conducting tests and have thus far indicated that there is no reason for any alarm,” read the statement.
However, Mandela’s health has been in question over recent months. In December, he had a lung infection and gallstone surgery resulting in a two-week hospital stay. He was later advised to slowly return to his daily routine.
In early January, current South African President Jacob Zuma said that Mandela’s health continues to make “steady progress” despite recent setbacks. After that announcement was made, Mandela continued to receive “high care” at his home.
