House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) traveled to Ghana as part of a U.S. congressional delegation to discuss regional security, the climate crisis, sustainable development, and to observe the 400th anniversary of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.
According to VOANews, Pelosi, Along with House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC), Congressional Black Caucus Chair Karen Bass (D-Calif.), and Reps. Barbara Lee (D-Texas) and John Lewis (D-Ga.) were all on the trip.
Pelosi is expected to speak with Ghanian lawmakers on Wednesday, with Ghana’s foreign minister Ayorkor S. Botchway telling reporters that the US House Speaker would “make an important address in the Senate, which will boost Ghana-U.S. relations.”
While on the trip, Pelosi is expected to visit Cape Coast and Elmina Castle, as well as the Door of No Return.
Video posted by VOA shows Pelosi celebrating with locals and representatives alike, at one point briefly dancing with a young child.
Pelosi posted to Instagram about her trip to Ghana, noting: “Today was deeply transformative. We saw the horrors of slavery and humbly walked through the ‘Door of Return’ [sic] with a renewed sense of purpose to fight injustice and inequality everywhere. We honored the rich traditions of Ghana and thanked the Paramount Chiefs for our enduring friendship.”
