Teen R&B group Mindless Behavior issued an apology to Lauryn Hill for comments made about her tax situation during the 2012 BET Awards.

While presenting the award for Best Female R&B Artist, group member Ray Ray said that co-presenter Mike Epps’ singing was bad, “like Lauryn Hill tax accountant bad.”

He was referring the Hill’s recent legal troubles with Uncle Sam. Last week the “Everything is Everything” singer pled guilty in a New Jersey court to charges that she didn’t pay her income taxes from 2005 to 2007. She faces three years in jail and up to $75K in fines.

“We meant no disrespect to our girl Lauryn Hill last night,” the group posted via Twitter, “It was a bad joke. We’re big fans and hope you’re not mad!”

The group also called into BET’s 106 and Park to clear the air on Monday, reports Vibe. Ray Ray said he didn’t mean any harm by the joke. “I hope everyone can forgive me. It was like a big thing on Twitter and everything, so I truly apologize.”
