First Lady Michelle Obama is no stranger to talking about her parenting style. In fact, she’s known for being rather strict on her daughters Malia and Sasha Obama.

Even though Mrs. Obama and the president are protective over their daughters, the First Couple give them a little space. “I give them as long a leash as they can handle,” she told Parade. “What I tell my kids is, I’m preparing you for college and for life. So, having independence, knowing how to set your own boundaries, figuring out how to make that balance. We still have screen time rules.”

Mrs. Obama also took a moment to clarify her comments on being a “single mother.” She revealed that the President Obama is involved in their kids lives despite his busy schedule. “When you have a husband or a partner who’s either traveling for work or has huge responsibility… and I give my husband credit—he knows who their friends are, he knows what their schedule is.”

Mrs. Obama explained that although her husband is involved in their kids’ lives, he isn’t exactly placing calls and scheduling things for the girls. However she believes it’s important for both parents to shoulder the responsibility for raising the kids. “I tell my kids, ‘I am thinking about you every other minute of my day,'” she said.
