The First Lady is embarking on a new mission ensuring that all young women around the world have access to a quality education.
The White House announced the “Let Girls Learn” initiative earlier today, spearheaded by Michelle Obama, which will partner with the Peace Corps and other worldwide agencies to make sure young women have access to proper schooling.
“[W]hen a girl receives a quality education, she is more likely to earn a decent living, raise a healthy, educated family, and improve the quality of life for herself, her family, and her community,” the White House said in a statement.
The $250 million initiative, which will be both publicly and privately funded, will build upon existing education programs and encourage other agencies to become involved with the cause. “Let Girls Learn” will be introduced in 11 countries to start, including Cambodia, Ghana and Uganda, before expanding into other nations.
“The First Lady has heard firsthand about the power of community-based solutions to eliminate barriers to adolescent girls’ education around the world,” the statement said.
The First Lady is expected to further introduce the plan during a trip to Japan and Cambodia later this month.
