On Tuesday, April 5, Michelle Obama hosted her final garden-planting event at the White House.

“It was eight years ago that we cooked up this really interesting idea that maybe we cold dig up some dirt on the South Lawn – maybe someone would let us do that and we cold plant a wonderful garden that would be a space where we could talk about the food we eat,” Madame FLOTUS stated.

“We have some of the kids who initially helped us plant the first garden,” she said. Present for the event were the then fifth–graders who, now in high school, had returned to garden alongside Mrs. Obama one last time.

The event represents the initiative to promote the growing of community gardens across the nation, which the First Lady hopes continues after she and her family leave the White House.

“This is my baby,” she said. “And hopefully this will not be the last planting—hopefully there will be other administrations who come in and take up this project and continue to make this a part of the White House tradition.”
