Michelle Obama called the Trayvon Martin tragedy a “tremendous loss” on NPR yesterday. It was the first time that Mrs. Obama revealed her feelings about the case, according to Yahoo.
“All I can say is that, you know, my heart goes out to the parents because we all as parents understand the tragedy of that kind of loss, and I think that’s really the thing that most people connect to,” she said.
She reminds us that the Martin family is still having a tough time. “And it’s important for us not to lose sight of the fact that this is a family that’s grieving and there’s been a tremendous loss,” said the First Lady. “And we all have to rally around that piece of it.”
Mrs. Obama’s comments come a few weeks after President Obama broke his silence on the case. Careful not to reveal too many details, he told reporters that if he had a son, he’d look like Trayvon Martin. “Obviously, this is a tragedy,” he said. “I can only imagine what these parents are going through. When I think about this boy, I think about my own kids.”
