Dr. Maya Angelou has never been the subject of her own film, until now.

A new Kickstarter campaign aims to get a documentary about the beloved poet to the small screen in 2016. Directors Bob Hercules and Rita Coburn Whack are raising funds to cover the remaining costs of the film they made of the late poet’s life, from her birth in 1928 to her passing in May 2014. Hercules and Whack have enlisted individuals from Angelou’s inner circle, including Oprah Winfrey and Coomon, to help tell her story.

The documentary is expected to air on PBS’ American Masters in Spring 2016, but needs additional funding to cover the costs of editing and licensing rights for images and footage. “If we are not able to rally all of the support we need through this campaign, we won’t be able to broadcast on PBS in 2016 as planned,” write the directors.
