Lauryn Hll will spend three months in prison and three months in home confinement for tax evasion. The Grammy winner was sentenced a day after paying about $970,000 owed in back taxes and penalties, reports the Associated Press. She had previously plead guilty to tax evasion on an estimated $1 million in income earned in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Hill explained that she had always intended to pay her taxes but was unable to because she was caring for her six children. “I needed to be able to earn so I could pay my taxes, without compromising the health and welfare of my children, and I was being denied that,” she told U.S. Magistrate Court Judge Madeline Cox Arleo.

Hill released her first official song in over a decade this past weekend. She posted “Neurotic Society Compulsory Mix” on her Tumblr page adding that it was a “rush” release because of her legal woes.

We wish Hill and her family the best.
