Interior design maven and host of HGTV’s “Myles of Style,” Kim Myles, will answer a question submitted from an ESSENCE.com reader every day. Kim believes that interior design should offer a lifestyle that’s chic, vibrant and attainable for every homeowner or renter. “My goal is to offer simple solutions that help the average person achieve the look that they want without going into debt. There is absolutely no reason for great design to be overly expensive or exclusive,” she declares. Today’s topic: A restful space Hi Essence Family, I work two jobs and its really important that I have a restful space at home. I’d like to know what are good design elements to keep in mind when trying to design a bedroom that is peaceful and where I can get some deep alpha rest. I burn scented candles and incense and know that pleasant smells soothe me. What else can I add? Thank you. KIM MYLES: Aromatherapy is a great start, and I’d also suggest that you edit your bedroom down to its simplest version. I’ll use myself as an example, although I love design and have a home full of color and life, I choose to keep my bedroom relatively minimalist. The walls are painted a soothing pale grey/blue, the windows are hung with simple white canvas panels, and the walls are empty save for a single round mirror and my framed black and white wedding photo. I have one dresser, two beautiful lamps, three white glass vases…and that’s it. What this allows me to do is quiet my mind when I’m in the one room dedicated to resting. Without visual distractions, I’m able to settle into a great night’s sleep far more quickly and easily than I have in any of my past bedrooms. Don’t get me wrong, opulence and the “more is more” approach to a bedroom is fun, but I’ve found that the simplicity of my new space is elegant, restful, and far more conducive to a deep and peaceful sleep.
