Interior design maven and host of HGTV’s “Myles of Style,” Kim Myles, will answer a question submitted from an ESSENCE.com reader every day. Kim believes that interior design should offer a lifestyle that’s chic, vibrant and attainable for every homeowner or renter. “My goal is to offer simple solutions that help the average person achieve the look that they want without going into debt. There is absolutely no reason for great design to be overly expensive or exclusive,” she declares. Today’s topic: Office Space Dear Kim, I just got a new job and I love my new office almost as much as I love everything else about the position. I would like to paint the walls something different than the sad white that’s up there now. I want color but I don’t want people to think I’m weird and screaming for attention in the first month. What colors are appropriate yet will make me feel comfy? KIM MYLES: I think that you’d LOVE either a rich dove grey, or a warm toffee hue. Both are sophisticated (workplace appropriate), beautiful and welcoming as well as easy to accessorize because they’re neutral. (The key is to choose versions of these colors that aren’t too pale–that runs the risk of looking dull and industrial.) If accessorizing with bold color on top of this base seems too much, consider a vase of fresh blooms as a staple in the space–it’s a great way to bring life and vibrancy inside without going over the top.
