Interior design maven and host of HGTV’s “Myles of Style,” Kim Myles, will answer a question submitted from an ESSENCE.com reader every day. Kim believes that interior design should offer a lifestyle that’s chic, vibrant and attainable for every homeowner or renter. “My goal is to offer simple solutions that help the average person achieve the look that they want without going into debt. There is absolutely no reason for great design to be overly expensive or exclusive,” she declares. Today’s topic: Upgrading my office space Dear Kim, I am not a homemaker, I never had an eye for decorating, and I am ashamed to admit it but I buy furniture and just place it in space. I am getting to the point where I am embarrassed to have anyone in my home. I need help. I have a office space that is a good size room, with computers and office furniture. I think it is time for a make over since I have editors and customers that come to my home and I would like it to be a show piece. I am an entrepreneur and don’t have much money but would love tips on making my home office look presentable. KIM MYLES: First, let’s get the “shame” out of the process. We each have strengths and weaknesses, and we rely on each other to balance them out. Though you may not have an “eye” for design, you’re obviously a savvy and motivated person as an entrepreneur, so let’s let that confidence be our guide–deal? Ok. Start with your desk, since that’s the base of your power and operations–choose something sleek, modern, and elegant. I like Ikea’s Besta Burs desk in high-gloss black paired with Target’s Leather Executive Chair in Earthstone. The Dolce Striped Print Lounger Chair (also from Target) would make any client feel at home–I’d do two in the space. Coat the walls in Valspar’s ‘Cliveden Leather,’ hang grommeted black canvas curtain panels on the windows, and you have the keys to a beautiful office.Read more:
