Former child actor and Disney “Cheetah Girl” Kiely Williams’ latest song, “Spectacular” is causing a stir on the blogoshpere thanks to some alcohol-infused lyrics in which she extols the virtues of going out to the club, getting drunk and having random unprotected sex with a man whose name she can’t remember. She sings: “Last I remember I was face down, ass up, clothes off, broke off, dozed off. Even though I’m not sure of his name…You can call me a slut but what he did to me last night felt so good, I must have been on drugs, I hope he used a rubber, or I’ma be in trouble.” First of all, have we not had enough of songs about the club encounter, ladies? If this the only place Black love is initiated these days we’re in big trouble. You hope he used a rubber? Need we even mention HIV and Herpes rates among women aged 18-34? I won’t go so far as to say this song is about date rape, but Williams is condoning a continuing theme in music: Buy me a drink and you can get it. Exhibit A: Teairra Mari’s “Sponsor.” In her defense Williams says the song is just that, a song and has no deeper meaning. “I am playing a character,” she said in a video statement. “Young women across the country get intoxicated and have unprotected sex. I wrote “Spectacular” and made the video to bring attention to a serious women’s health and safety issue.” “So singing about how “spectacular” it is to have drunk, unprotected sex with a random dude who’s name she doesn’t know is a public service announcement?” asks writer Denene Millner. “For what? The quickest way to get HIV? Raped? Pregnant? Called a ho?” In the video Williams turns heads as she walks down the street wearing a fur coat, a mini-skirt and fishnet stockings. Umm, last time we checked this was the stereotypical image of a hooker, not a young woman taping a PSA. This somehow brings to mind of a joke Dave Chappelle tells about women who wear suggestive clothing: “Just because a woman dresses a certain way doesn’t mean they are a certain way,” he says. “But ladies, you must understand that is f***king confusing.” To all R&B singers, can you please stop making these “Buy me a drink and you can get it” songs? They’re confusing and tacky. Read More:
