Former NBA star Kevin Johnson, who played for the Phoenix Suns, was elected the first Black mayor in Sacramento after a campaign patterned similar to President-elect Barack Obama’s platform of change, reports the Los Angeles Times. Johnson ousted incumbent Heather Fargo by a 15-point margin, according to the newspaper. However, race was not an obvious issue in Sacramento, where Blacks make up about 14 percent of the population. Doug Elmets, a Sacramento political consultant, said: “The mayor stared blindly into her rear-view mirror while Johnson was focused on the road ahead.”
