Earlier this week, Jamie Foxx released his first song in four years, “Party Ain’t A Party” featuring 2 Chainz. Yet, the DJ Mustard-produced single has the Oscar-winner headed to court for copyright infringement.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, before getting together with Foxx, producer DJ Mustard sent the instrumental to J Rand’s then-record label, Poe Boy Music Group. After recording a song of his own with the track, J Rand and Poe Boy “possessed sole ownership in the copyright of the sound recording.”
J Rand’s label, Nontra Records, gained rights to the song when they bought out J Rand’s contract. The lawsuit states that “the underlying material and Jamie Foxx’s lyrics contained in the Subsequent Work are identical to the lyrics sung by J Rand in the sound recording of the Original Work.” They do state, though, that the “only discernible difference” between the two tracks is 2 Chainz.
Nontra Records is demanding at least $150,000 from the defenants for copyright infringement.
