Wisconsin has one of the highest African-American infant death rates in the
United States and a local organization is working to get to the bottom of
it. The African-American Infant Mortality Coalition believes that the
problem is community-related and not solely a problem for Black mothers.
Black mothers are three times more likely than White moms to lose their
infants. Studies suggest that genes, mental stress, and neglect play a part
in the death rates, but experts are still unclear. The University of
Wisconsin-Madison medical researchers and the Madison-Dane County Health
Department are currently conducting a study.
