Republican state Senator Seth Harp caused a stir after a proposal to combine two historically Black colleges with surrounding, mostly White institutions. Harp’s plan to combine Albany and Savannah Universities with neighboring colleges stands to lower educational spending by millions and decrease segregation, according to The New York Times. Harp notes, “We really need to close the chapter of segregated schools and create a unified system.” Despite the senator’s vigor, such a plan is unlikely due to overwhelming opposition by Black educators. The New York Times reports Darton College, one of the suggested neighboring colleges, was also surprised by Harp’s suggestion.
