President Obama unveiled his education budget last week to the dismay of most of the 105 federally recognized historically Black colleges and universities. Many HBCUs received part of an $85 million fund for the past two years which was specifically for Black institutions, according to the Associated Press. Education Department officials said the additional $85 million was temporary and that HBCUs shouldn’t have counted on it continuing this year.
And it gets worse. Not only won’t HBCUs receive the funding, but due to budget cuts, Black colleges and universities are looking at trimming $73 million from their budget.–WLW
