“I think I’ve spent my adult life dealing with the sense of low self-esteem that [was] sort of implanted in me. Somehow I felt not worthy,” Halle Berry told CNN during a profile of her volunteer work at Jenesse Center, an organization that helps families that have been affected by domestic violence. The subject hits close to home for Berry, whose father abused her mother when she was a child… Berry gives the women and kids at the Jenesse Center what she couldn’t give her mother when she was a little girl by spending her free time there and renovating apartments so women who leave their abusive partners can have a safe place to go. “They can rejuvenate and feel hugged and loved,” she told CNN. Berry had a message for any woman who is currently suffering from domestic violence: “Get out. Don’t stay a moment longer. If there’s no shelter, go to a friend, go to the police station, go somewhere, but go.”
