Georgia is the only state in the nation where two Black women sit at the head of the highest courts in the state. Chief Judge Yvette Miller, newly elected to the position and the first African-American woman voted in, became Chief Judge in the Court of Appeals of Georgia. She has been re-elected for two six-year terms. Justice Leah Ward Sears became the first African-American woman, first woman and youngest person ever to serve as Superior Court Judge in Georgia when she was first appointed in 1992.—WLW
