Flight Attendant Surrenders After Attempting to Smuggle 70 Pounds of Cocaine Through Airport Security

File this under “head-scratching” news.

A JetBlue flight attendant is in police custody after she was caught trying to smuggle nearly 70 pounds of cocaine—worth an estimated $3 million—through LAX airport security last week, reports CBS News.

New York Prosecutor Will Not Recommend Prison Time for Officer Who Killed Akai Gurley

According to authorities, 31-year-old Marsha Gay Reynolds, a Jamaican-born beauty queen, was off-duty last Friday when she arrived at LAX airport and was selected for a random security check. After she was taken to the checkpoint area, she dropped her luggage, took off her Gucci shoes and ran out of the terminal. Airport employees say that they didn’t pursue her because they were concerned about the abandoned luggage.

Earlier this week, Reynolds turned up in New York City, where she turned herself into police. Her bail has been set at $500,000, and she faces up to 10 years in prison.

Texas Trooper Who Arrested Sandra Bland Pleads Not Guilty

“Our nation’s security depends on every individual with security clearances to honor the trust placed in them,” U.S. Attorney Eileen Decker said in a statement. “The defendant’s conduct violated that trust and, in the process, exposed the public to a major narcotics transaction and the dangers inherent to such a transaction.”

Los Angeles police suspect that due to the vast amount of cocaine that Reynolds was carrying, this was not her first time smuggling drugs through airport security. Though the TSA is unable to screen all flight workers due to costs, the agency is encouraging security personnel to bump up the amount of random security checks.
