Brandel J. Shouse, the father of Fantasia Barrino’s 13-year-old daughter Zion, has filed for custody of Zion in a Meckleburg, North Carolina court.
The American Idol winner’s rep confirmed through a statement released this week that in addition to seeking custody, Shouse is asking for visitation and child support from Barrino despite the fact that he has not provided any financial support to Zion since the child was born.
“Fantasia also knows that all of her ‘Baby Mama’ fans know exactly what she is going though and will support her as she continues to take wonderful and complete care of her daughter,” reads the statement.
The singer revealed during her VH1 Behind The Music episode that her relationship with Shouse became abusive shortly after she gave birth to Zion. The couple ultimately split in 2003.
Proceedings for the case won’t begin until 2015, but Fantasia says she is confident that the court will make the decision that is best for Zion.
