Rachel Dolezal’s much-anticipated address to accusations that she has been pretending to be Black has been postponed and instead she has resigned as president of the Spokane NAACP chapter, in a posted letter on Facebook.
Dolezal wrote: “It is with complete allegiance to the cause of racial and social justice and the NAACP that I step aside from the Presidency and pass the baton to my Vice President, Naima Quarles-Burnley.”
Dolezal said in a statement that she would address the claim made by her parents that she has been posing as a Black woman during the Spokane NAACP chapter monthly meeting. The chapter announced Sunday in a statement released on Facebook that the meeting would be delayed.
“Due to the need to continue discussion with regional and national NAACP leaders, tomorrow’s meeting is postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date,” the statement said.
Although she has officially resigned from her post, Dolezal is promising to stay commited to her civil rights work.
“Please know I will never stop fighting for human rights and will do everything in my power to help and assist, whether it means stepping up or stepping down, because this is not about me. It’s about justice. This is not me quitting; this is a continuum.”
The nationwide discussion about culture, identity and what race really means has picked up speed with thought leaders and the general public alike chiming in.
