ESSENCE Poll: Does It Bother You When Brothers Celebrate Women of Other Races?

You don’t have to look further than Pharrell’s album name Girl (out today) to see that the artist’s first solo album in eight years is a celebration of women. The theme is also apparent in his album cover which features three attractive women standing next to him in bathrobes. However when the album cover art dropped, people criticized it complaining that Black women weren’t represented.

The criticism prompted Pharrell to call Power 105.1’s “The Breakfast Club” last week to clarify that there is a Black woman on the album cover.

“What really disappointed me is that they jumped the gun, because the one I’m standing the closest to is Black,” he explained. “She’s a Black girl from Wisconsin that I used to date over 10 years ago.”

Pharrell continued to express is disappointment in people assuming that he would leave Black women out of his “ode to women.”

“I’m a Black man,” he continued. “They just reported that I’m the first Black person to go #1 on pop radio since Rihanna, but then you’re gonna shoot at me? Of course I’m doing this for us. My mom is a Black woman that is a huge part of my business. My business is run by another Black woman and I’m married to a Black woman.”

Listening to Pharrell defending his love for Black women got us thinking, is it really that wrong for Black men to also celebrate women of other races? Does it bother you? Tell us more in a comment.
