We’ve all seen commercials for sites like BlackPeopleMeet.com or ChristianMingle.com where beautiful people flirt over dinner, take long walks and find ‘the one,’ but is it fair to stop group-specific dating there?
According to the Washington Post, Where White People Meet is a new site getting a lot of slack from people that believe it’s racist.
Sam Russell, creator of the dating site says that he suspected it would ruffle some feathers but it’s “all about equal opportunity.”
“The last thing in the world I am is racist. I dated a Black woman once. I helped raise a young Black man … I just believe it’s hypocrisy to say ‘one group can do this, but another can’t,” Russell explained.
The former auto salesman is referring to dating sites that cater to Jews, Hispanics, religions and specifically BlackPeopleMeet.com, which is the site that actually gave him and his wife the idea to start a dating site of their own.
Although Where White People Meet’s target audience is specific, Russell insists that anyone over 18 can join regardless of race and ethnicity. Still, many are wondering if the site is neccessary given the upperhand that whites already seem to have on diverse websites like OkCupid.
So what do you think? Is it racist to have a site dedicated to white people only? Or is it no different from any other race specific site? Share your thoughts below.
