Just two weeks after exchanging wedding vows, Eddie Murphy and Tracey Edmonds have separated, according to a statement the couple sent to People magazine on Wednesday.
The couple’s intimate wedding, which took place New Year’s Day on a private island off Bora Bora, was not legally binding because of the foreign location. However, they reportedly had planned to follow up with a legal ceremony in the United States. The plan seems to be off.
“After much consideration and discussion, we have jointly decided that we will forgo having a legal ceremony as it is not necessary to define our relationship further,” the couple said in the statement. “While the recent symbolic union in Bora Bora was representative of our deep love, friendship and respect that we have for one another on a spiritual level, we have decided to remain friends.”
Murphy and Edmonds started dating in fall 2006 and became engaged last July.
