She began her career in the ’60s with the Supremes and went solo in ’70s. Her larger-than-life persona — including giant hair, red-hot catsuits, and dazzling stage outfits solidified her as a diva extraordinaire. Over the course of her career, she’s earned 12 Grammy nominations, and shockingly, no Grammys.
In 1976, Billboard named her the Female Entertainer of the Century. To add to a long list of accolades, including a 1973 Oscar nomination for Best Actress for “Lady Sings the Blues,” the Guinness Book of World Records lists her as the most successful female artist in history. Since her career began, she has released 67 albums — something most artists can never even hope to accomplish.

The Recording Academy is posthumously honoring Gil Scott-Heron with the same award for his astounding contributions to music. The other honorees include the Allman Brothers Band, Glen Campbell, Antonio Carlos Jobim, George Jones and the Memphis Horns.
