Punk meets funk! Natural hair guru Derrick Scurry derrickscurry.com makes the mohawk lush and sexy by adding Afro-curly hair, braided about a half inch from the scalp through the crown and the back. The sides are cut and tapered. For more hair-styling tips, pick up the February issue of ESSENCE.
This cut is long on style but short on fuss, perfect for the gym bunny. New York City stylist Marvin A. Carrington ( macstyle.net ) razor-cut the hair into short layers. He spritzed on a leave-in conditioner and followed with a spray of setting lotion for texture and shine. (We like Lottabody Texturing Setting Lotion.) He used his fingers to create this snappy tuft-like texture.
Brooklyn stylist Hadiiya Barbel hadiyabarbel.com updates the pixie with the tousled layers. The crown is kept long for maximum movement and volume while the back is tapered. Barbel applied a dime-size amount of pomade through the ends for a piecy finish. She used a light spritz of Tigi Work It Hairspray for hold and volume.
