It’s no secret that Ta-Nehisi Coates is brilliant. He has spouted his wisdom in some of the country’s largest publications, and he can now add “MacArthur Genius Grant recipient” to his overflowing resume.

According to the Huffington Post, the MacArthur Foundation announced early this morning that Coates would be on of this year’s 24 recipients who will receive $500,000 over the next five years to continue his work.

“A highly distinctive voice, Coates is emerging as a leading interpreter of American concerns to a new generation of media-savvy audiences and having a profound impact on the discussion of race and racism in this country,” the foundation said in a statement.

Over the summer, Coates authored his second book, Between the World and Me, which grapples with the country’s racial injustices. Most recently, he penned “50 Years After the Moynihan Report, Examining the Black Family in the Age of Mass Incarceration” for the October issue of The Atlantic.
