Julian Bond, long-time civil rights activist, died Saturday night at the age of 75.

According to CNN, Bond passed away after a brief illness in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

A key figure in the movement, Bond served as one of the co-founders of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), a leader of the SPLC, and more recently, a chairman of the NAACP.

Bond left his footprint in education and law as a professor at various universities including Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania, and an elected representative to the Georgia house, also serving in the Senate for years.

“The NAACP mourns the passing of chairman Julian Bond, civil rights titan and our brother,” the civil rights group said in a tweet. “May he rest in eternal peace.”

He is survived by his wife, Pamela Horowitz, and his five children.
