Cicely Tyson will be honored with a Doctorate of Fine Arts degree from the American Film Institute.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the veteran actress will be recognized for her “contributions of distinction to the art of the moving image.”

Tyson and the American Film Institute have a long history, she is an alumna of the Institute’s Directing Workshop for Women where she directed the short, Save Me a Place at Forest Lawn in 1977. She also starred in Sounder, a film recognized by the institute as one of the most inspiring films of all time.

The American Film Institute will present Tyson with the honor during their Conservatory’s commencement ceremony on June 11 in Hollywood.

The Trip to Bountiful actress will also receive a honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Columbia University this spring.
