Police in Port St. Lucie, Florida, tell PEOPLE that early Monday morning, they pulled the dead body of a missing 4-year-old girl from a retention pond a few blocks from her home.
Chelsea Noel disappeared Saturday night, sparking a widespread search for the child.
According to police, she walked out of her home.
A local report said Chelsea was a non-verbal special needs child and that police believe became disoriented after leaving her house.
Police believe she ran straight into the pond, according tho the Sun-Sentinel.
Police tell PEOPLE that the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement joined the Port St. Lucie Police in searching for the little girl.
Officers went door-to-door looking for Chelsea. Vacant lots and ponds were also combed.
Police confirm that late Sunday, a search team in a kayak happened upon a small submerged body.
PEOPLE was unable to reach the girl’s family Monday morning for comment.
