Bravo!: Italy Elects First Female Black Mayor

Sandy Cane, 47, was elected Italy’s first Black mayor, according to the Huffingtonpost.com. The 47-year-old will be the mayor of Viggiu, a small town, east of Milan, after barely winning 30 percent of votes cast by the town’s 5,000 residents. Cane, who was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, is the daughter of an American soldier and her mother, who is from Viggiu, later immigrated to France. Cane’s win is not without controversy since she’s a member of Italy’s anti-immigration Northern League. Cane said, “In Italy I have been insulted for the color of my skin only once, by a drunk guy in a nightclub. I became a candidate because I love Viggiu; for me it is fantastic, it is my city.”—MS
