It’s been four years since Whitney Houston died and nearly ten since she divorced her husband. But for as much as the 20/20 special Bobby Brown: Every Little Step focused on Houston and the pair’s years together Tuesday night, one would think they were still married.

No seriously, Brown used to be a star in his own right. Yet anytime anyone ever talks to the R&B singer anymore, it’s about Houston. Even his upcoming autobiography dedicates whole chapters to his union with the musical superstar.

Bobby Brown Is Releasing ‘Therapeutic’ Memoir

When it came to his relationship with Houston, Brown said he was never jealous of her fame, hit her once but never again and is ashamed of their reality TV series, the 2002 Diane Sawyer interview and their codependency on drugs. As he has in the past, Brown said he didn’t hook Houston on drugs because she came to the relationship that way, adding that the first time he saw her snort cocaine was on their wedding day.

Just before Brown’s big reveal, reporter Chris Connolly recalled a story where Brown was performing at the MTV Video Music Awards and a vial of cocaine fell out of his pocket and he picked it up. This was before Brown and Houston knew each other so one can only assume they both indulged in cocaine use before becoming a couple.

Unfortunately, all we can do is speculate because host Robin Roberts didn’t ask Brown. She also didn’t ask him about his alleged adultery while married to Houston. But kudos to her for pressing him on his brush with domestic abuse even if some viewers didn’t believe it was a one-time occurrence.

Bobbi Kristina Brown Died From a Combination of Drugs and Drowning

But the whole special wasn’t about his relationship with his late, great wife. Brown also talked about losing his 22-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina to drugs – a death he blames mostly on her boyfriend Nick Gordon in addition to himself and Houston – and all of his regrets regarding his relationship with their only child.

Despite their ups and downs, the father and daughter had made peace with each other in 2015 and Brown said they’d agreed that Bobbi Kristina would move to Los Angeles to be closer to him. Sadly, that never happened because she was found unconscious two days after their reunion and died later that year. Brown added that had he known his daughter’s fate, he would have personally moved her out of Atlanta.

Say what you will about the 47-year-old singer but when he cried over the loss of Bobbi Kristina, those were real tears. No father should have to bury his child and Brown is no exception.

The special also included interviews with Babyface, three of Brown’s adult children and his current wife and manager, Alicia Etheredge. Other highlights included Brown saying he once had sex with a ghost and the singer admitting he still struggles with alcohol abuse.
