New Edition singer Bobby Brown pleaded not guilty to DUI charges stemming from last month’s drunk driving incident, reports E! Online.

Brown didn’t appear in court today, but sent his lawyer, Tiffany Feder, in his place. The star was pulled over and arrested in San Fernando Valley, California on March 26 for chatting on his cell phone.

He was ultimately charged with three misdemeanors during the arrest, including driving on a suspended license, driving with a blood alcohol level greater than 0.08 and driving under the influence. Brown failed a “field sobriety test” on site.

Commissioner Rebecca Owens forbade Brown from drinking alcohol between now and his May 16 pretrial hearing.

“He was speaking on his cell phone,” said Feder in a statement last month. “Mr. Brown has not been convicted of anything associated with this incident. Mr. Brown is taking this matter seriously and an investigation is underway. The legal process shall run its course.”
