Bob Jones University, a private fundamentalist Christian college that was founded in 1927, admits its rules on race were molded by culture instead of the Bible. The school issued a statement apologizing for practicing racist methods, such as the one-time ban on interracial dating that wasn’t changed until just nine years ago, and refusing to allow Blacks admission to the school, reports the Associated Press.
The college recently released a letter after still receiving questions about its perspective on race. “We failed to accurately represent the Lord and to fulfill the commandment to love others as ourselves…,” according to the statement posted on the school’s Web site.
