The sacrifices of being at the top of your game are something Beyonce knows all too well. The ESSENCE July cover girl recently revealed that she gave up the simple pleasures of her teenage years to focus on her career.

The singer says that when she left school early to focus on music, she missed out on making friends. “I left school at 14 and had a tutor. I was never exposed to people long enough to make friends so my family became my friends,” she told the Sun, a UK newspaper.

Beyonce adds that her mother, Tina Knowles, encouraged her to follow her young heart. “Very early on, my mom was telling me to be who I wanted to be. When I was seven, I performed on stage for the first time and fell in love with the feeling. I was awkward around other kids but felt comfortable on the stage.”

It all paid off. Beyonce’s worldwide fame, talent and business acumen are truly a testament to the many years of hard work!
