When it comes to hot hair and fierce looks, Beverly Johnson is the fairy godmother to all things fabulous. The former model was the first African American woman to grace the cover of Vogue back in 1974, and since her famous magazine cover debut, she’s been working on the forefront and behind-the-scenes in the beauty biz.

Just last month, Johnson released her own line of synthetic hair, wigs, and hair care products at Target. Getting on the shelves of one of the world’s largest retailers was no easy feat, but Johnson was determined to bring affordable beauty to the masses to give women of all income brackets a chance to feel beautiful.

“I think that one should not be afraid of makeup, hair and style,” said Johnson. “I think it’s a sign of confidence when you pull yourself together to present who you want to be and how you want to feel, instead of just playing everything down.”

Johnson’s Target offerings will include Model Logic by Beverly Johnson, a multicultural line of seven luxurious haircare products geared towards women and men of all ages. She’ll also offer Beverly Johnson Drawstring Ponytails, which feature a blend of synthetic and natural hair that can withstand the high heat of a curling iron for numerous styling options.

The collection will be her second foray into the hair extensions world following her successful brand of human hair that was distributed in beauty supply stores in the early 2000’s. Her first hair line was a learning experience for Johnson who says this time around she wanted more control of her brand.   

“I used to have my own line of hair, but this time I did not work with the Koreans, although they were great and I loved them,” said Johnson. “I decided to fully own the brand down to the boxes with my face and name on them. I distribute and manufacture all of my own products and I don’t have to compromise.”
