The election is just around the corner, and nasty tricks deter Black voters are surfacing. A flier of unknown origin is making its way in African-American neighborhoods in North and West Philadelphia, threatening voters who are facing outstanding arrest warrants or unpaid traffic tickets. The letter states that people may be arrested at the polls on Election Day if they fit the profile, according to Philly.com. The poster seems to be targeting Obama supporters, said Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Everett Gillison. He did make clear: the message is completely false. However, this gimmick is nothing new. In Maryland’s 2002 gubernatorial election, mysterious leaflets in Black communities warned people to pay parking tickets and resolve outstanding warrants before heading to polls. “We are not going to stand for any intimidation for voters,” Gillison said to Philly.com. “Not in this city.”
