Missy Elliott made history this weekend when she became the first female rapper to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She is the third rapper accepted into the organization, joining Jay-Z and Jermaine Dupri.
The “Work It” rapper was
nominated for the honor in November, at the time becoming the first female rapper to be nominated for the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Elliot joins other 2019 inductees Dallas Austin, Tom T. Hall, John Prine, Jack Tempchin and Yusuf/Cat Stevens, who were announced on Saturday.
“I want to CONGRATULATE all the AMAZING songwriters who have been inducted into the 2019 ‘Song Writers Hall of Fame,’” she wrote on Twitter. “Also those who were nominated because their body of work is AMAZING. I AM SO HUMBLY GRATEFUL to now be inducted also.”
Elliott has penned songs for musicians like Ciara, Janet Jackson, and the late singer’s Whitney Houston and Aaliyah.
The 2019 class will be inducted at the 50th annual Induction & Awards Gala in New York on June 13, 2019.
